How to Make a Pirate Jacket
Show off some pirate style and impress all the landlubbers with a fancy pirate jacket. While ordinary pirates may rely on cut-off pants, striped T-shirts and bandanas, step it up a notch and look the part of the ship's captain with a pirate jacket you've created yourself. With some time, creativity and some craft supplies, it isn't hard to transform a regular jacket into one for a pirate. Whether its for a costume party, Halloween, a theatre performance or just because, a pirate costume decked out with a pirate jacket is sure to look great.

1
Browse a thrift shop, old closet or department store sales rack for a suit coat, sports coat or blazer. While any color can work, a rich color, such as navy blue, deep violet, crimson or bright blue, will look best. Also, select a coat that is a little long, if possible.
-
2
Use scissors or a seam-ripper to remove all the buttons from the jacket. Sew new, shiny gold buttons to the spots where the old buttons were. For a more dramatic fashion, find gold buttons that are larger than the old ones. While these large buttons will no longer fit through the button-holes, they look more regal and impressive.

3
Adorn the bottom of the jacket and the bottom of the sleeves with two stripes of gold rick rack. Glue two stripes about an inch apart at about 1 1/2 inches from the bottom of the jacket and the sleeves.
-
4
Measure the circumference of the inside of the bottom of the sleeves. Measure out a length of white lace that is also about 4 inches wide. Sew the lace at the bottom of the inside of the sleeves so that a flow of lace protrudes out of each sleeve and creates a frilly look for a pirate captain.
-
5
Wear the jacket with a frilly white shirt, tight pants and boots. A three-cornered hat, eye patch, beard and hair with beads will complete the look.
