Teachers can encourage younger students to explore music by creating a class band. Each student is assigned an instrument to make and then learn how to play. One such instrument is a set of cymbals. Cymbals are a percussion instrument that create a loud sound when banged together. Students who don't have two matching pot lids can construct their own cymbals out of aluminum foil pie tins.

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 Plastic Handles
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Aluminum Foil Pie Tins

Flip two aluminum foil pie tins upside down so that the flat bottom is facing you. It is important that the pie tins be of equal size and shape.

Plug a hot glue gun into the nearest outlet, and give it time to heat up. Generally, this takes less than five minutes.

Squeeze hot glue over the bottom of a plastic handle, and push the handle down onto the middle of one of the aluminum foil pie tins. Hold in place until the glue cools and hardens into place. Plastic handles removed from an old jump rope work well for this purpose.

Repeat with the second pie tin so that both cymbals have handles. Once the glue hardens, the children can begin banging the cymbals together to make music.

Warnings:

  • Younger children should not use the hot glue gun without help. Serious burns can occur when the hot glue gun is not used properly.
