How to Apply Applique to an Afghan

An applique, also commonly known as a motif, is a small piece of fabric cut into a certain shape generally colored with water-soluble markers. You can apply these enhancements to clothing as well as blankets and afghans. Buy these embellishments in a wide variety of shapes and sizes or make them homemade for custom sizing and colors. To attach an applique to your afghan, you'll have to use some common sewing items.

Instructions

  1. Making the Applique

    • 1

Place fusible webbing, paper side up, onto a table. Set the applique or motif onto the paper side of the fusible webbing.

    • 2

Trace around the applique with a pencil, creating a copy of the outline on the paper side of the fusible webbing.

    • 3

Cut the outline from the fusible adhesive with scissors loosely around the lines, leaving some space outside the lines.

    • 4

Select a motif fabric of your choice to create the actual applique.

    • 5

Moisten a cloth under warm water and wring it once or twice to leave it moist but not wet. Put the moist cloth over the motif fabric and iron it.

    • 6

Cut the applique along the lines out of the motif fabric using scissors.

    Apply Applique to Afghan

    • 7

Push the motif fabric attached to the fusible webbing down onto the afghan, webbing side first.

    • 8

Iron over the motif fabric, causing the fusible webbing to stick to the afghan. Let cool as long as directed by the manufacturer thereafter.

    • 9

Place the afghan with the applique under a sewing machine and stitch the applique to the afghan.

    • 10

Tie off the end of the thread in a knot, then cut away any loose ends of thread with scissors to finish attaching your motif to your afghan.
