How to Make Frayed Satin Flowers

How to Make Frayed Satin Flowers thumbnail
Satin fabric is shiny and glossy—a fancy option for clothing and craft projects.

Satin flowers are decorative and elegant. Use them for home floral arrangements, bouquets and centerpieces, and wear them as accessories or embellishments on a headband, scarf or other piece of apparel. Make your own frayed satin flower from satin ribbon or fabric. Because minimal needlework is required, these projects are very beginner-friendly.

Instructions

  1. Ribbon Flower

    • 1

Cut a 20-inch piece of wide, wired satin ribbon. Cut one side of the ribbon to remove the wire edge and allow for fray.

    • 2

Cut a round piece of felt, approximately 3 to 4 inches in diameter. Shape one end of the ribbon into a circle, aligning the wire edge around the piece of felt. Slightly overlap the ribbon and the felt. Pin the ribbon in a circle around the felt.

    • 3

Using a needle and thread, sew the ribbon to the felt circle. Use a hot glue gun to apply glue in a spiral pattern on top of the felt.

    • 4

Wrap the remaining ribbon into a spiral pattern on top of the felt, aligning the wire edge on top of the hot glue. Press the ribbon down to compress with the glue.

    Fabric Flower

    • 5

Use fabric chalk to draw different sizes and shapes of flowers on satin fabric. If fabric is two-sided, draw on the back side (without print).

    • 6

Layer three to four satin flowers on top of each other, placing larger flowers on the bottom and smaller flowers on top. Use the same fabric or vary fabrics and colors for contrast.

    • 7

Thread a pearl bead through a piece of two-inch jewelry wire. Bend the wire in half with the pearl bead in the middle. Poke the two ends of the wire through the layers of satin, one layer at a time.

    • 8

Twist the wire behind the bottom layer of fabric to secure the flower layers together. Cut excess wire with wire cutters.
