Felt remains an affordable option for creating birthday cards, puppets and decorations. Felt can also be a fantastic add-on to clothing, purses and other fabric arts. If you are looking to make a gift for a friend or to create unique garments for yourself or your children, a felt applique is a fantastic way to add pizzazz. You can design your own applique, which can then be attached to a wide variety of other fabrics using a few household supplies.

Things You'll Need

  • Felt sheets
  • Pen
  • Scissors
  • Fusible web
  • Iron

Instructions

      Sketch out the applique design of your choice onto a piece of felt using a pen or fabric marker. Cut out the design element using a pair of scissors.

      Lay the newly cut felt applique on top of a sheet of fusible web. Trace around the perimeter of the felt piece onto the fusible web. Cut out the matching fusible web piece using a pair of scissors.

      Turn on your iron and allow it to heat up. Lay the felt piece right side down on the ironing board. Place the piece of fusible web on top of the felt piece so that the edges match up. Press the iron onto the fusible web and felt making sure to press for about 10 seconds to ensure the web adheres to the fabric.

      Turn the felt applique over and place onto the garment or fabric of your choice. Press the iron into the top of the felt applique to allow the heat to transfer through the felt and onto the garment or fabric. Make sure that all of the fusible web is connected to the felt and the cloth through the heat. Allow to cool completely.

  • Cut out felt shapes using scallop-edged scissors to create a unique border.
