How to Get Soap Scum Off Shower Curtains & Liners

Soap scum buildup is a common issue in the bathroom. Shower curtains and liners are especially vulnerable and are typically difficult to clean when the buildup is thick. Luckily, it's fairly easy to prevent the soap scum buildup using a mild wash routine.

Things You'll Need

  • Spray bottle
  • Cleaning rag
  • Washing machine
  • Towels
  • Laundry detergent
  • White vinegar
  • Fill a spray bottle with equal parts water and white vinegar, and also add a spoonful of laundry detergent. Shake the bottle to mix ingredients.

  • Spray this over the shower curtain and liner during your regular bathroom cleaning routine, and wipe off the solution with a damp cleaning rag.

  • Place the shower curtain or liner into the washing machine for deep cleaning. Place a few large towels into the washer as well so that the liner moves around more freely.

  • Pour in a capful of your normal laundry detergent along with a cup of white vinegar. Run a hot water cycle and let the wash complete.

  • Remove the curtains or liners when the cycle is finished and hang them back up in your shower area.

Tips & Warnings

  • Read the care directions that come with your shower curtains and liners to make sure machine washing is appropriate.
