Customize a standard hair clip.

When trying to keep long hair out of your face, it’s a good idea to use a hair tie or clip. A scrunchy or standard barrette works perfectly well, but an alternative to a basic hair clip is a homemade one covered with a felt. Making felt barrettes at home is simple, and they can be decorated to match your personal taste with flowers or other designs.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut out two pieces of felt in the shape of tear drops that are 1 inch wide and an inch longer than the hair clip.

    • 2

Make a small cut 1/2 inch above the bottom of one of the felt tear drops. The cut needs to be wide enough to fit the top of the clip.

    • 3

Sew the two tear drops together around the edge using a needle and thread. Use a thread that matches the felt.

    • 4

Slide the top of the hair clip through the cut made in Step 2 to finish the felt barrette.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sew felt designs to the top half of the barrette before attaching the two pieces together. Small felt flowers or more elaborate designs can be used.

  • The tear drop shape can be replaced with any other shape as long as it easily covers the hair clip. Due to the common shape of hair clips the tear drop is the obvious choice.
