How to Do a Unique Knit Scarf Fringe

How to Do a Unique Knit Scarf Fringe thumbnail
Transform your scarf from warm to wow with beaded fringe.

Make your knitted scarf look special by adding a yarn and bead fringe. The fringe takes patience, but is easy to make and suitable for the novice crafter who is knitting their first scarf. The detailed fringe will make your knitting look professional and add a touch of glamor. When selecting beads, ensure that their holes are large enough to fit two strands of the yarn you will be using, and that the beads are strong enough to withstand the wear and tear of everyday use.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two strands of yarn, 16 inches long, and lay them next to each other so that the ends are aligned. Fold them in half so that they form a "U" shape

    • 2

Hook the crochet hook through the two yarn strands and pull the crochet hook through the last row of stitches of the scarf. You now have a loop on one side and the loose ends of yarn on the other.

    • 3

Thread the loose ends of yarn through the loop and pull them tight. Repeat until you have small tassels along the length of the scarf's edge.

    • 4

Separate the four ends of each tassel into pairs. Starting at the left hand side, take the second pair of yarn ends and feed a bead onto them. Do the same with the third pair. Push the beads to the top of the yarn. Tie the second and third yarn pairs together with a knot. The bead will slide down to rest on the knot when you hold the scarf up.

    • 5

Continue to tie half of one tassel to half of the tassel next to it until all the tassels have been beaded and tied, except for the two at the end.

    • 6

Start on the left hand side again. This time, feed a bead onto the first pair of yarn strings and the second pair of yarn strings from the same tassel and tie a knot in them. The second knot should be about 1 inch down from the first. Continue to knot the strands from the same tassel together until all the tassels have been knotted.

    • 7

Repeat Steps 4 through 6 until you have as much beaded fringe as you would like. Leave a 2 inches of fringe free at the bottom of the tassels.

Tips & Warnings

  • Tie knots securely to avoid losing beads.
