How to Make a Fake Refrigerator for a Diorama Project

The purpose of a diorama is to imitate a real-life scene as a frozen moment in time. For example, a diorama can be made of a city street or a room in a home. Make a fake refrigerator for inclusion in a 1/3rd scale diorama depicting a home kitchen. Hardware supplies and items from a crafts store or hobby shop will be needed.

  • Plastic tape
  • Child's cabinet, 24-by-12-by-10 inches
  • Masking tape
  • White spray paint cans
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Handle
  • Silver spray paint can
  • Bonding glue

      Place the plastic tarp on the ground outside in your backyard. Place the child’s cabinet on the tarp upside down. Remove the screws from around the legs on the bottom of the cabinet with the Phillips screwdriver. Pull the legs off and place them aside.

      Turn the cabinet right side up. Open the door of the cabinet. Place masking tape against the hinges on the inside of the door where it meets the door frame. Run a strip of masking tape along the inside edges of the door frame on the top, bottom and sides. Close the door.

      Shake the can of white spray paint for 30 seconds. Spray the top of the cabinet in a clockwise lateral pattern that begins in the upper left corner and ends in the lower right corner. Let the paint dry for three hours before applying another coat.

      Shake the can of white spray paint for 30 seconds. Spray the left side of the cabinet in a clockwise lateral pattern that begins in the upper left corner and ends in the lower right corner. Let the paint dry for three hours and then apply another coat. Repeat this painting procedure with the back and right side of the cabinet.

      Open the cabinet’s door. Remove the tape from the inside edges of the door frame and from the hinges. Remove the door knob screw from the inside of the door with a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the knob off the door and place it aside.

      Place the handle on the tarp. Shake the can of silver spray paint for 30 seconds. Spray the handle with the paint. Let the paint dry for three hours and apply another coat. Turn the handle over and repeat the painting procedure.

      Apply bonding glue to the back of the handle. Place the handle against the door so that it covers the space where the knob was. Press the handle against the door and hold it there for one minute. Let the glue set overnight. Place your fake refrigerator in the space in the diorama that it is to occupy.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't let the bonding glue touch your hands as it can pull skin off.
