How to Have an Outdoor Wedding Ceremony in the Wintertime

How to Have an Outdoor Wedding Ceremony in the Wintertime thumbnail
Winter provides a breathtaking backdrop for wedding ceremonies.

Picturing a bride and groom bundled up in hats, mitts and down coats in front of a preacher rubbing his hands together for warmth doesn't conjure up warm wedding memories. Despite the cold, outdoor winter weddings are gaining in popularity. Planning an outdoor winter wedding isn't much different than any other outdoor wedding; you just need to address the issue of the cold. Plan a traditional wedding with appropriate, but warmer, attire or a nontraditional wedding where the wedding party and guests dress for warmth.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the theme and colors for your wedding. Holiday themes using red and green colors are popular. An alternative theme plays on the concept of winter itself -- frost and ice -- utilizing pale blue, white and silver colors.

    • 2

Compose the invitations for your outdoor winter wedding in accordance with your theme. Along with the usual invitation information, highlight that the ceremony will be held outdoors and that guests should dress warmly.

    • 3

Plan the decorations for your wedding in accordance with your theme and colors. Use silk flowers rather than real flowers; they'll stand up better to the colder temperatures. For a holiday theme, cedar boughs provide a deep green color and a pleasant aroma.

Contact your local rental company and ask about the best tent to rent for warmth. Also ask about renting space heaters for the interior of the tent.

    • 5

Plan the wardrobe for the wedding party with warmth in mind. For a traditional wedding, plan for a warm cape or stole for the women and lined suit jackets for the men in the bridal party.

    • 6

Plan the menu for the wedding party with warmth in mind. Choose comforting foods like roasted meats, hearty stews and warm drinks like hot cocoa or cider.
