How to Crochet Block Letters
You can use the slip stitch to crochet block letters onto an afghan sweater or other crocheted project. If the item you wish to add letters to is crocheted with a solid crochet stitch, such as a row of single crochet, you can easily stitch on block letters. This allows you to add names or words to make the item more personal and individualized to the wearer. You work the slip stitch with the crochet hook on top of the item and the yarn held below it.

1
Draw the letters you want to embellish on a piece of graph paper using a pencil. Draw it so that one corner in the graph equals one hole between two stitches. Draw the letters using double lines making block letters.
-
2
Place the graph paper onto the object you want to embellish to ascertain if it is the size you desire. If not, erase and adjust your lettering.

3
Place a size J crochet hook into a hole found between two stitches in the garnet you want to embellish. Hold cotton yarn under the item and place the yarn over the hook. Pull the hook through the hole to the top of the item.
-
4
Place the hook into the next hole to the left of the previous hole. Yarn over the hook underneath the item and pull the yarn through the item. Pull the yarn through the loop that is on your hook from the previous hole. This creates one slip stitch.

5
Continue in this manner around the item to create block letters. Use your graph as a guide to make the correct amount of stitches.
-
6
Cut the yarn on the under side of the blanket when you finish one letter. Place the hook into the last stitch in the letter and pull out the tail of yarn. Cut the tail to 1 inch and push it back through to the bottom side of the item.
