How to Make a Tricorn Straw Hat
A tricorn hat has the front and sides of the brim turned up to channel water away from the wearer's face. This style of hat, made of wool, was worn in the military and Navy in the late 17th century and 18th century. Tricorn hats also were worn by pirates to shed water from heavy rains and waves. You can make a tricorn hat in a short time with a few inexpensive items you may have on hand.

1
Fold the front center of the straw hat brim upward. Hold the fold in one hand. Slide a stapler over the fold and staple it together 1 inch from the fold.
-
2
Set the hat on a table or flat surface. Fold the center of the left side brim onto the hat with one hand and place a staple about 1 inch from the fold. Repeat this step to staple the right side of the brim.

3
Tear off a small piece of duct tape and tape each of the staples on the inside of the hat. Thick duct tape keeps the staple from catching on your hair or skin while the hat is worn.
-
4
Take your tricorn straw hat outdoors. Place newspaper on a flat surface. Set the hat on the newspaper and spray paint it using long, slow strokes to color the hat evenly. Let the hat dry. Turn the hat over and spray paint the inside.
