How to Crochet Pajama Pants

How to Crochet Pajama Pants thumbnail
Crochet projects are ideal for all ages.

Crocheted pajama pants are an easy project for beginners and an inexpensive way to stay warm in the winter. Wool pants or long underwear are relatively pricey, but you only need to purchase skeins of yarn to make your own crocheted pajama bottoms. They are especially appropriate for keeping toddlers warm while sleeping or playing.

Things You'll Need

  • Wool yarn
  • Size H hook
  • Yarn needle

Instructions

    • 1

Begin with the legs of the pants. You will make the legs separately first, and then attach them to the waist of the pants. With the yarn color of your choice, chain approximately 60 stitches.

    • 2

Wrap the length of chain around the largest part of your thigh. Add or remove stitches as necessary to ensure a proper fit. If the pants are a gift for someone else, estimate to the best of your ability. Wool yarn stretches considerably, so exact measurements are not crucial.

    • 3

Join the ends of the chain stitch with a slip stitch. Ensure that you do not twist the chain before joining.

    • 4

Crochet around using a double-crochet stitch. Repeat until you reach the desired length of the pajama pants. Pull the tube over your leg to gauge the length.

    • 5

Single-crochet for two rows around the bottom of the pajama pants to make a hem. Use a different color if you want added contrast to the pants. Fasten off, and weave in the ends.

    • 6

Repeat Steps 1 through 5 for the other leg.

    • 7

Chain approximately 300, or as many as you need to fit around your waist comfortably. The chain should be a little tight, as wool yarn stretches over time.

    • 8

Join the chain with a slip stitch, ensuring that the chain is not twisted.

    • 9

      Single-crochet around for three rounds.

    • 10

Double-crochet around for seven rounds. You may make more or less, depending on the length of your waist.

    • 11

Turn the waist segment and the legs inside-out. Align one leg segment with the waist, and single-crochet the leg to the waist segment, starting at the outside. For the inside, you may need to "pinch" the waist segment together to sew completely around.

    • 12

Use a yarn needle to weave a piece of braided rope through the waist to form the drawstring.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wool yarn may shrink considerably if you put it in the dryer. It is best to hand-wash and hang dry homemade projects.
