How to Make Vintage Guitar Straps

Your guitar strap is part of the show as well.

A guitar strap isn't just a functional piece of leather that keeps your guitar supported while you rattle off your solos. The strap has to be comfortable, and it really should complement your guitar's look for performances. If you want to make a strap that looks vintage while being green and cheap all at the same time then you're going to need an old belt you can modify into a new strap.

Things You'll Need

  • Belt
  • Scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Take your existing guitar strap off the guitar and lay it out on the work surface. Lay out your vintage belt and compare the lengths. If the guitar strap hangs at a spot you find comfortable, mark the places where it connects to the guitar with your chalk. Alternatively, if you don't have an existing strap, sling the belt around your neck and press it against the guitar at a level you would be comfortable with. Mark the places where the belt presses against the anchor nubs.

Cut a small gap for the anchor point at the places marked. If the gap isn't large enough then slowly enlarge it until it fits. If you cut it too big though, you'll have a problem unless you can sew it back up again.

    • 3

Press the strap over the anchor points, sliding them through the holes you made. Put the strap around your neck as you would with any other guitar strap and play to ensure that the fit is comfortable for you.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want a pad on the strap, slide it on before you attach the anchor points. The same goes for decoration you'd like your new strap to have. Remove the buckle from the belt if it has one, unless you like the way it looks on your strap.
