How to Model a City in Blender

If you are working on a scene in Flash, Photoshop or another graphics program in which you need a graphical representation of a city, one way to get it is to create a generalized city model in the freeware 3D application Blender. Blender is a professional-level modeling and rendering application with all the tools and abilities you would expect from a pricey commercial product. Making a cityscape in Blender is a relatively simple process.

Instructions

      Go to the view and hit the spacebar on your keyboard. In the dialog box that appears, select “Mesh.” From the options, choose “Plane.”

      Select the plane in the view and hit the "W” on your keyboard. From the options, choose “Subdivide.” Repeat this step three more times.

      Go to the panel at the bottom and change “Object Mode” to “Editing Mode.” Hit “A” on your keyboard to deselect all the vertices.

      Go to the right change the selection mode to “Face.” Go to the view and drag with the middle mouse button to rotate the plane in the view.

      Right-click on one of the faces. From the options that appear, choose “Extrude.” Drag on the selected face with the mouse to raise up a square building.

      Repeat Step 5 to create more square buildings, leaving spaces between to act as streets. You can create larger buildings with different shapes by raising several adjoining faces to the same height. Save your work.
