How to Avoid Wedding Mishaps

How to Avoid Wedding Mishaps thumbnail
Some wedding mishaps are easily avoided.

A bride prays for a picture-perfect wedding day filled with love, joy and no mishaps or unexpected problems. The thought of cold food, wilted flowers or a missing wedding ring sends chills down her spine. No bride wants to hear bad news on her wedding day, especially when negative situations could be avoided if the necessary precautions are taken. With the right amount of planning, preparation and adequate forethought, wedding mishaps will not ruin your day.

Instructions

Plan a dress rehearsal. During dress rehearsal, many common problems with attire can be caught and addressed. Have a full dress rehearsal for the bride, groom and the entire wedding party to try on suits, gowns, shoes, makeup and hairstyles. Look for any noticeable clothing problems such as loose buttons, stains, holes, broken zippers and, most importantly, outfits that do not fit or fit poorly. Hold the dress rehearsal at least one week before the wedding to ensure there will be time for alterations to clothing if needed. Makeup and hairstyle should be checked and approved as well.

Have a pre-wedding photo shoot. Holding a wedding shoot to take formal photos of the bride, groom and bridal party prior to the wedding will free up some time on the day of the wedding for the newly married couple to celebrate their nuptials with their guests during the cocktail hour instead of using that time to take pictures.

Do a taste test. Prior to choosing a menu for the reception, be sure to taste samples of everything you intend to serve to your guests. Inform the caterer of any food allergies or religious requirements necessary for you or your guests prior to the time the food is to be prepared.

Weather-proof your party. Have an alternate space in mind if your wedding is an outdoor event. Have tents available for the ceremony, cocktails, and reception in case a sudden rainstorm should occur. Tents with sidewalls that drop down are a good choice. Keep lots of large umbrellas handy for the bride, groom, guests and bridal party.

Keep the cake in a safe place. Avoid placing the cake in a location where it might be knocked over by dancing reception guests. Choose a corner or side of the room where it can still be seen but far enough away from the wedding reception action.

Make a music playlist. Be sure to note what songs must be played at certain times during the event such as the couple's first dance and bridal party introductions. Also include a list of approved songs for the event as well as a list of prohibited songs that should not be played.

Place a limit on alcohol. Having an open bar may be a tempting idea if you want your party to be a festive and lively event. However, consider whether you have guests who act uncontrollably under the influence of alcohol. No bride wants her drunk bridesmaid or alcoholic uncle having one too many and doing something inappropriate. Consider having a cash bar or avoid serving alcohol completely to avoid any unsightly behavior.
