How to Make a Broom Pencil thumbnail
Broom pencils make great Halloween party favors.

A "magical" broom pencil is a party favor for kids of many ages. The Harry Potter series of books and movies are popular with children from preschool age to their teens. Make a broom pencil with a few items from a craft store at little cost. These favors are ideal for themed parties, such as Harry Potter, Halloween or an over-the-hill party for a woman's 40th or 50th birthday. Easy to create, children will enjoy helping you make the broom pencils.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 2-inch piece of double-sided mounting tape with scissors. Remove the backing from one side of the tape and wrap it around the metal portion under the eraser on a wooden pencil. Remove the outer portion of the tape.

    • 2

Cut 10 strips of raffia about 4 inches long with scissors. Arrange the raffia around the eraser and press the raffia into the tape with your fingers. The raffia will extend up above the eraser.

    • 3

Remove one side of the backing and place a second 2-inch strip of the mounting tape on the raffia directly above the first piece on the pencil. Remove the exposed backing on the tape.

    • 4

Wrap and press gold star garland into the tape making one to two revolutions. Cut off the excess garland with wire cutters and tuck the cut end underneath the garland.

    • 5

Trim some of the top edges of the raffia slightly, to give the broom an uneven appearance.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use gold star garland to blend in with a natural raffia color or use colored garland to accent your broom pencil.

  • Hot glue a small paper witch onto the broom pencil for a Halloween party.
