Braided friendship bracelets make ideal gifts.

Braiding, also known as plaiting, is a technique which involves weaving together multiple strands of rope or hair. A friendship bracelet is an item of jewelry which is given as a token of affection. A simple cardboard braiding disc is used as a tool to keep the threads untangled, making it simpler and quicker to braid the bracelet. You can alternate the number and color of the threads you use, to create an ideal friendship bracelet with a personal finish.

Things You'll Need

  • 7 strands of embroidery floss (each 25 inches long)
  • Circular piece of cardboard (3 inches in diameter)

Instructions

    • 1

Pierce the middle of the cardboard disc with the sharp end of the pencil.

    • 2

Cut eight small, evenly-spaced slits around the outside edge of the cardboard disc. Each slit should be approximately 0.2 inches deep.

    • 3

Align the tops of the seven strands of embroidery floss. Tie a double knot just below the tops of the strands.

    • 4

Push the knot through the hole in the middle of the braiding disc.

    • 5

Place each of the loose strands of embroidery floss that are hanging from the cardboard disc into an individual slit. You should have one slit that remains free - it does not matter what slit this is.

    • 6

Rotate the cardboard disc so that the empty slot is at the top of the disc. Pick up the strand of embroidery floss that is in the third slot to the right of the empty slot, and place this strand into the empty slot.

    • 7

Repeat Step 6 until you have braided the desired length of bracelet.

    • 8

Tie a double knot at the end of the bracelet. Use scissors to cut off any unwanted strands of embroidery floss.
