1
Measure your room with a tape measure across both the length and width. Multiply the two distances together to determine the square footage of the room. For example, if the room is 10 feet by 12 feet, the total square footage in the room is 120 feet.

2
Calculate how many feet are in a square yard by multiplying the length and the width together. A square yard is 3 feet wide and 3 feet long. This means there are 9 square feet within a square yard.

3
Divide the number of square feet of your room established in Step 1 by 9 to determine how many square yards are required. For example, 120 square feet divided by 9 is 13.33 square yards.
