How to Carve a Watermelon With Roses for a Wedding

Fruit carving is the art of taking an ordinary piece of fruit such as a watermelon, cantaloupe or pumpkin and making a sculpture within it. The most common carving for weddings is roses. With a little patience and some sharp tools, you can design your own watermelon rose carving as a centerpiece for wedding tables.

Instructions

    • 1

Trace a heart onto the side of the watermelon with a heart stencil and a Thai knife. The heart should take up roughly half of the front surface of the watermelon. Or, if you prefer carving more hearts on the outside, select a heart stencil that takes up only one-quarter of the watermelon's front surface.

    • 2

Remove the outside skin from the heart, leaving the rind.

    • 3

Carve out a rose shape starting at the middle of the heart with a carving knife. If you have never carved a rose shape before, you will want to use a carving stencil, available at any craft store. The key is to carve the petals as natural as possible, meaning the center petals should be smaller and close together and the outside petals should be larger and farther apart. Carve the outside petals deeper into the flesh to bring out the red part of the watermelon underneath.

    • 4

Add a frilled edge around the sides of the heart with a round, slotted knife. Position the knife perpendicularly on the outside edge of the heart and press slowly into the flesh at a 30- to 45-degree angle. Repeat this around the entire heart.

    • 5

Trace a larger heart around the small heart. This will form a frame around the rose. Cut deeply around the frame so that you will know where to stop when clearing the rest of the front of the melon.

    • 6

Clear the rest of the front of the melon with a peeler to remove the skin. But leave the rind.

    • 7

Carve more roses around the outside of the heart with the carving knife.

    • 8

Finish off the edges of the carving with more frills with the round, slotted knife. Make these frills slightly longer to finish off the entire front of the watermelon.
