Your AT&T U-verse digital television converter box contains an array of ports for connecting a DVD player and a VCR as well as connecting the box to a television via an S-video cable. You can also connect a Samsung Surround Sound system to your AT&T U-verse converter box to utilize the box’s stereo sound. For true digital stereo sound, purchase and use an Optical S/PDIF cable to complete the audio connection of your AT&T U-verse converter box to your Samsung Surround Sound system.

Step 1

Turn off and unplug both your AT&T U-verse converter box and your Samsung Surround Sound system. Turn both devices around so the backs of the devices are facing you.

Step 2

Plug your Samsung Surround Sound system’s front, center and rear speakers, as well as the subwoofer, into the corresponding ports under the “5.1CH Speakers Out” heading on the back of the sound system, if you haven’t already done so. Each speaker contains a label that matches the port on the back of the sound system.

Step 3

Plug one end of an HDMI cable into the “HDMI In” port on the back of your Samsung sound system and plug the other end of the cable into the “HDMI” port on the side or back of your television, if you haven’t connected the sound system to your television already. If your television only contains a composite “Video In” port, plug one end of a yellow composite cable into the “Video In” port on the back of your Samsung sound system. Plug the other end of the yellow cable into the “Video Out” port on the back of your television.

Step 4

Plug one end of an Optical S/PDIF cable into the “Optical” port on the back of your AT&T U-verse converter box. Optical S/PDIF cables are available at electronics, hardware and retail superstores. If you are unable to purchase an Optical S/PDIF cable, proceed to the next step, otherwise, skip to Step 7.

Step 5

Plug one end of a white composite cable into the “Audio Out L” port on the back of your AT&T U-verse converter box. Plug one end of a red composite cable into the “Audio Out R” port on the back of your AT&T U-verse converter box.

Step 6

Plug the other end of the white composite cable into the “Aux In 2 - L” port on the back of your Samsung Surround Sound system. Plug one end of a red composite cable into the “Aux In 2 - R” port on the back of your Samsung Surround Sound system.

Step 7

Plug the other end of the Optical S/PDIF cable into the “Digital Audio In - Optical” port on the back of your Samsung Surround Sound system. Turn on your television, if it is off. Turn your AT&T U-verse converter box and your Samsung Surround Sound system around; plug in the devices and power on both devices.

Step 8

Press the “Function” button on your Samsung Surround Sound system’s remote control until “D.IN” displays on your television’s screen, if using an Optical S/PDIF connection. Press the “Function” button until “Aux 2” displays on your television, if using a composite connection. Audio from your AT&T U-verse converter box emits from the sound system’s speakers.

Step 9

Press the “Vol +” button on your surround sound system’s remote control to increase the system’s volume. Press the “Vol -” to decrease the system’s volume.
