How to Make a Square Quilt Block Into a Rectangular Quilt
Making a quilt of any shape and size requires making quilt panels. Quilt panels are small squares that make up the top half side of your quilt. Building a rectangular quilt out of square panels is a simple process that requires laying out your panels in a specific way that creates a rectangular shape. You must understand the basic process of sewing and stitching before you begin creating a quilt.

1
Measure out a square on your cloth that is about 4 inches by 4 inches. Vary the size of the square depending on your own needs. Cut out the square with your scissors.
-
2
Trace your square 10 times onto your cloth and cut out each square. Decorate each square by sewing patterns into the top with your sewing thread and needle.
-
-
3
Lay these squares next to each other in a row. Position them so they are touching. Place them with the decorated side facing down. Leave them on the floor for the time being.
-
4
Cut out another 10 squares to create your second row. Decorate them in the same way and lay them underneath of your first row. Continue cutting out and decorating squares in this method until you have made 13 rows.
-
5
Sew the squares in each row to the square directly to left and right sides. Sew them along the edges to hold them together. Sew each row in this method until you have 13 rows of sewed together strips.
-
6
Pull the rows up to each other until they are touching. Sew them together along their length to create the top layer of your quilt. Make sure each row is firmly attached to the one above and below it.
-
7
Place your top layer on top of your cloth and trace it out on the cloth. Cut out this second rectangle to create the bottom layer of your quilt.
-
8
Place the quilt top layer on the floor with the decorated side facing up. Put the bottom layer on top of this layer with the shiny side facing downward. Sew the rectangles together around the outer edges, leaving one side open.
-
9
Pull the quilt inside out through the hole you left open. Stuff the quilt with cotton until it is firm. Stop stuffing if it begins to bulge along the seams.
-
10
Smooth the bunched up areas of cotton with your hand to spread it out evenly. Sew the last side together to finish.
