How to Make Sunflower Petals From Paper thumbnail
Sunflowers are colorful flowers for a paper project.

Sunflowers are large, colorful flowers. Known for their richly colored yellow petals, these flowers make a cheery addition to a paper flower project. Sunflowers have a large number of individual petals, so cutting out these petals will make up the bulk of this project. There are two ways you can go about preparing your sunflower petals for this paper crafting project. One option will give you more control of the petal shape, while the second will save you time on your crafting project.

Instructions

  1. Option 1

    • 1

Draw the shape of a sunflower petal onto a thick sheet of cardstock. If you have a sunflower petal, simply trace the shape. If not, look at a picture of a petal and freehand your design. Your local craft store might also have a sunflower stencil that you can use as a guide.

    • 2

Cut out the petal from your sheet of cardstock. This will be used as a stencil for your sunflower design. You only need one petal stencil if you are creating only one size of paper sunflower. However, if you plan to make a variety of paper sunflowers, trace out as many different size petal stencils as needed.

    • 3

Trace a petal onto a yellow sheet of construction paper, rice paper or whichever type of paper you need for your project. Start at one corner of the page to get as much use out of the sheet of paper as possible. Continue to trace your sunflower petals until you have made as many as you need. Sunflowers have plenty of long, thin petals, so you may need to fill up several sheets of paper if you are making multiple flowers.

    • 4

Cut out your individual petals with scissors.

    Option 2

    • 5

Create a sunflower petal stencil on a sheet of cardstock.

    • 6

Fold a piece of yellow paper in half, then in half again, and repeat until it is roughly the size of the sunflower petal you want to create. Trace the sunflower petal onto one side of the folded-over paper.

    • 7

Cut out your traced shape. Because the paper was folded, you will have multiple petals with one cut. Repeat until you have the amount of sunflower petals you need for your project.
