How to Decoupage Plates Using Fabric
You can create designer looking plates to finish off your decorative table setting by decoupaging with fabric. Decoupaged glass plates can also accent your home decor when hung up or displayed on a plate stand. Also, since you are choosing the fabric, you can use any extra cloth to make coordinating napkins or table runners. Because of the fabric and glue, the finished plates cannot be washed in the dishwasher. Instead, clean the front of the plate with a soapy sponge and then wipe it clean with a damp cloth. Do not soak the plate or the decoupage glue will soften.
Things You'll Need
- Glass plate
- Fabric
- Scissors
- Newspaper
- Decoupage glue
- Foam paintbrush
- Craft knife
- Plastic scrubbing sponge (optional)
Instructions

1
Wash and dry the glass plate.
-
2
Spread out the fabric and put the plate on it. Move the plate around until you are happy with the pattern showing through the glass.
-
-
3
Cut the fabric out one to two inches larger than the plate.
-
4
Protect your work surface with newspaper and put the plate face down on the paper.
-
5
Paint a thin coat of decoupage glue all over the back of the plate using a foam paint brush. Although the glue will dry clear, make the coat even and with minimal brushstrokes for the best finished results.
-
6
Place the fabric you cut out onto the newspaper, right side up. Brush a thin coat of decoupage glue over the surface of the fabric.
-
7
Center the fabric, glue side down, on the back of the plate. Smooth the fabric onto the plate, working out any bubbles or wrinkles. Brush a thin coat of decoupage glue over the back of the fabric which is now covering the plate. Allow the glue to dry.
-
8
Trim the excess fabric off the plate with a craft knife
-
9
Seal the back of the plate with a final coat of decoupage glue. If there are any gaps along the edge, brush a little glue under the fabric and smooth it down. Allow the plate to dry overnight.
-
10
Scrub off any glue from the front of the plate with your fingernail or a plastic scrubbing sponge.
