Your baby will get fewer UV rays if you cover his seat with a tent.

Car seat tents have increased in popularity because, at the time of publication, awareness of the danger of overexposure to the sun is high. Naturally, parents want to protect their babies and toddlers from the sun while in the car. However, your tent doesn't have to be all about safety -- choose a hip fabric to make your tent the talk of the playgroup.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut your fabric to get a piece 36-by-30-1/2 inches. Cut two pieces that are 36-by-6-1/4 inches. Connect the "right" sides of the fabric. Flatten the seams. Pin the pieces into place.

    • 2

Place a large bowl on the corner of your piece, so just the side piece sticks out from under it. Run a pencil along the curve to trace the shape onto the fabric. Cut along the line you just made. Do this for all four corners of the material. Sew the narrower pieces to the wider piece.

    • 3

Snip the corners and turn the cover so it isn't inside out anymore. Use a turning tool to line up the fabric at the seam. Pin the edges down and close the opening. Sew the opening closed.

    • 4

Cut some ribbon to make the straps for your tent. The dimensions of these straps will vary, given the manufacturer of the seat. Cut hook-and-loop str-ps so it's just as wide as the ribbon. Sew it on one side.

    • 5

Put the car seat on a table or the floor, and place the tent over it. The straps should run over the top of the handle of the seat, giving slack for the tent to hang down over the whole seat. Find and mark the best place to stitch the straps into place. Sew them to the tent.
