How to Make Pencil Drawings That Do Not Smudge

Colored pencils are one of many types of craft pencils.

Pencil drawing is a traditional art form in which the artist draws on paper with one or more of many different types of drawing pencils. These pencils all write differently; for example, some may use graphite, while others actually use a type of plastic to make marks. Usually, pencil drawings take a considerable amount of time, as they tend to be very detailed. All this time can be wasted, though, if you accidentally smudge your pencil drawing. Take preventative measures to avoid smudging your art.

Instructions

Choose a type of pencil that's resistant to smudges. Avoid pencils with softer tips, as these tend to smudge more easily. If using a mechanical pencil, use lead made for colored pencils. According to artistdaily.com, oil-based pencils are relatively smudge resistant.

Imagine your finished work beforehand, and figure out which parts to draw first to avoid having to put your hand over already-penciled areas. You may wish to start at one corner of the paper and work up, to avoid dragging your hand across the paper.

Use a clean piece of scrap paper to keep your hand from touching your work. This paper should not move across the drawing while you work.

    • 4

Spray your work with fixative spray when you finish. This provides a protective barrier over your pencil drawing so it does not smudge.
