DIY Square Wreath Tutorial

Celebrate fall by hanging a square wreath on your door.

Square wreaths are certainly becoming more popular, but they are still considered a modern twist on a classic idea. You can create your own square wreath for any season, and place it on your front door as a unique item to welcome visitors. You could even hang these wreaths on the front windows of your home, as they will complement the straight lines and sharp corners of the window frame.

Things You'll Need

• Square wreath frame or picture frame
• Garland, fall, winter or Christmas themed
• Hot glue gun
• Fall or winter berry picks
• 2-inch-wide ribbon, 36 inches
• Garland of greenery or silver tinsel
• Christmas holly, or Christmas-themed items, such as berries and pine cones
• Ornaments
• Artificial flowers
• Artificial birds
• Nuts
• Oranges (artificial)
• Apples (artificial)
• Green or purple grapes (artificial)

Instructions

Fall Wreath

1. Remove the glass insert from the picture frame, if that is what you are using as your wreath base. Hot glue one end of the artificial leaf garland to the back of the square frame. Hold it until the glue dries completely. This should take less than a minute.

2. Wrap the garland of artificial fall leaves around the square wreath form. Beginning in the back where you glued the garland, bring it up over the frame and through the hole in the middle. Continue wrapping around the frame, moving down the side as you wrap. Space the garland evenly around the frame. You may need to wrap a few extra times at the corners to completely hide the wreath frame. Continue until you have wrapped it around the entire frame and have reached the spot where you first began wrapping. If your wreath is large, you may actually need more than one leaf garland to completely cover the frame.

3. Hot glue the end of the leaf garland to the back of the wreath frame, holding it secure until it dries.

4. Insert the fall berry picks into the frame. If your wreath frame is made from extruded polystyrene foam or from grapevine, you can simply push them in. If using a picture frame or other hard surface frame, hot glue the picks in place.

5. Tie the ribbon into a large bow. Hot glue it in place at the top or bottom of the wreath. You could also make it off-center and place it in a corner of the wreath; play around with what looks best before gluing it in place.

Other Wreath Ideas

1. Wrap the wreath frame in a Christmas-themed greenery garland. You can also use a garland of silver tinsel. Once the garland is secure, stick Christmas-themed picks into the wreath. Small, wrapped gift boxes, tiny bells or ornaments give a seasonal appearance.

2. Push the stems of artificial flowers into an extruded polystyrene foam wreath frame. To make them more secure, push them in, then take them out; fill the hole with hot glue and put the stem back in the hole. Add flowers until the foam wreath frame is completely covered. Add a few artificial birds for a lovely spring wreath.

3. Hot glue artificial fruits to the wreath frame. Fill in smaller spaces with nuts still in their shell. These wreaths look nice for any season. Change out the color of any ribbon you may have on the wreath. Bright oranges, colorful red apples and clusters of green and purple grapes give the wreath good color.

Tips & Warnings

• Use just a small dab of hot glue; at the end of the season, take the wreath apart and use the frame for a different purpose.
