How to Cite a Self-Published Work
Whether you're writing a research paper for a college course or you're putting together a proposal for work, you have to cite the sources used. If you're using a self-published book for reference, whether you or someone else is the author, get all the details and give your audience all the necessary information to find the source material. The formats given are for Chicago Style citations.

1
Cite the source in the bibliography. The citation format is: "Author last name, first name. Title. Publication place: Printer, date."
-
2
Cite the source in the complete notes for the paper, found at the end of the document. This format is slightly different, and is: "Note number. Author first name last name. Title (publication place: Printer, date), pages."

3
Put the citation in a References or a Work-Cited list if you use a list instead of a bibliography, such as for a short paper or article. This format reads, "Author last name, first name. Date. Title. Publication place: Printer."
-
4
Use in text citations when using quotes from or referring to the self-published work. These citations read, "(author date, page number)". If you were writing a quote it would be "according to Sigmund Freud in his work. (Freud 1886, 17-32)."
