How to Remove & Reinsert Trumpet Valves
Effective maintenance of a trumpet calls for periodically removing the valves. Dirt and other grime result in friction between the valve and valve casing. Removing the valves allows the casing to be cleaned and the valves themselves oiled for smoother action. Reinstalling the valves properly ensures that each valve is placed in its designated casing and correctly aligned.
Instructions

Removal
-
1
Turn the valve nut counterclockwise to loosen. If the nut proves difficult to turn, use a rubber jar opener for better grip.
-
2
Loosen all three nuts, one for each valve. The nut connects the valve to the trumpet.
-
-
3
Pull the valves, one at a time, up and away from their casings. Do not remove the valves entirely just yet. Instead, look for a number on the side of the valve. The numbers indicate the order of the valves on the trumpet. When reinstalling the valve, remember which direction the number faces. Reinstall the valve with the number facing the same direction.
-
4
Remove each valve. Lay the valves on a soft, lint-free cloth.
Installation
-
5
Insert the first valve into its proper casing. Position the valve so that its number is facing the same direction as originally. Repeat for each of the three valves.
-
6
Turn the first valve clockwise while listening for a "click." The click is the sound of the valve guide falling in place and aligning the valve with the ports. Repeat for each valve.
-
7
Turn the valve nut clockwise to tighten the valve in place. Be careful not to overtighten the nut. Repeat for the other two valves.

Tips & Warnings
If oiling the valves, apply oil inside the valve casings and alongside each valve. Allow the oil to drip free of the valve. The dripping oil carries away dirt and grime.
