Instructions

    • 1

Decorate the bed with a bed skirt, comforter and pillows. Because the bed is the dominant piece of furniture in a dorm room, use it to add color, pattern and interest. The bed skirt hides the space under the bed, which is valuable storage space.

    • 2

Place a rug that is 3 feet by 5 feet or smaller on the floor next to the bed. Small rugs do not require vacuuming; they can be shaken outside to quickly remove dirt and dust.

    • 3

Conceal bulky items such as winter clothing or sports equipment in a large trunk. Bring the trunk into the room to use as a coffee table, side table next to the bed, or as extra seating.

    • 4

Hang one or two large posters on the wall for decoration. If displaying photos of friends and family is important, frame a collage and hang it on the wall as one large piece instead of cluttering the room with small picture frames, which collect dust. Hang a bulletin board over the desk to hold notes, small photos and other papers.

    • 5

Store small accessories in solid containers out of direct view. Keep surfaces clear and clutter-free by packing toiletries, makeup, shaving supplies and office supplies in stackable containers with lids in the corner of the dresser and desk.

    • 6

Place a lamp on the desk and another at the bedside for nighttime reading. A solid-surface lampshade such as metal or plastic is easier to wipe clean than a shade made of cloth or natural fibers.

    • 7

Line a small trash can with a plastic liner and place it in a central location.

    • 8

Keep laundry in a basket without a lid at the bottom of the closet. Keep shoes in another basket in the closet, or under the bed hidden by the bed skirt.

    • 9

Arrange easy-to-use cleaning supplies in a decorative bucket with a handle that is easy to reach. Cleaning wipes, paper towels and a hand-held dustpan and broom are essential. Spills can be wiped up immediately when cleaning supplies are readily available.

Tips & Warnings

  • Place extra trash can liners in the bottom of the trash can so they are readily available when the bag is full.

  • A rug larger than 3 feet by 5 feet may be too large for one person to shake out alone.
