How to Notate Music in Logic

Apple's Logic Pro provides a powerful workspace for recording and sequencing audio. The program has a small enough learning curve that new users can create intricate audio patterns after working with Logic for a few sessions. But Logic is also deep enough that advanced users can create dynamic songs with layers of effects, audio patches, Musical Instrument Digital Interface and Virtual Studio Technology instruments. And if your background in music is based on theory and composition, you can even use Apple's Logic to compose song by writing out the musical notation for each of your project's tracks.

Instructions

    • 1

Double-click on the hard drive icon that contains your installation of Logic. Open the "Applications" folder inside of the hard drive's finder window and then click on the Logic icon to launch the program.

    • 2

Click on Logic's "Browser" tab, if you wish to work on an existing project. Select your project from the files listed below the tab.

    • 3

Click on the track you'd like to work with in the center "Arrange" window. If the track doesn't contain a sample or instrument, you'll need to add one. Click on the "Bin" tab, and then drag an instrument over into an empty portion of the "Arrange" window.

    • 4

Click on the "Score" tab at the bottom of the "Arrange" window to begin organizing the selected instrument's notes into a score.

    • 5

Select one of the notation objects, such as a note or rests, in the "Score" window's sidebar. Drag and drop the selected object over to the "Score" window's staff. And as many notes as you like.

    • 6

Click on one of your score's notes in the staff to edit the note's length and velocity -- you can select several notes at once, if desired. Click on the "Velocity" or "Length" field beneath the "Notes Selected" tab. Increase or decrease the value for the selected field to change your note's duration of volume.

    • 7

Add text to your score. Drag and drop a text type, such as chords or lyrics, from the "Score" window's sidebar to the desired location on the staff -- type in your text.

    • 8

Click on Logic's "File" button, and then select the "Save" or "Save as" option to save your project.
