How to Make a Paper Newsboy Hat
Newsboy hats are relatively easy to make, and can even be made out of paper. This classic style of hat, usually made from wool or tweed, was popular in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Worn by both boys and adult men, the newsboy hat is generally associated with that period of time when newspapers were hand delivered by young boys. The style consists of eight panels which converge at the top, which you can make easily at home.
Things You'll Need
- Large sheet of craft paper, butcher paper, or sturdy wrapping paper
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Glue
Instructions

1
Cut out a circle, 16 inches in diameter, from a large sheet of paper. The center point of the circle is 8 inches.
-
2
Draw a circle, 10 inches in diameter, inside the 16-inch circle. The center point of the circle is 5 inches.
-
-
3
Fold the circle three times to make a cone shape. Make sure the line for the inner circle shows on the outside of the folds.
-
4
Measure 1 inch from the outside of both sides of the cone and mark it. Draw a line from this mark to the edge of the inner circle mark to form a triangle. Cut along this line on both sides of the cone shape.
-
5
Open the circle. You now have eight panels and eight notches. Working in a clockwise motion, overlap each notch and fasten together with glue. This is the base of your hat.
-
6
Fold a 10-inch by 5-inch piece of paper in half to make a square. Draw a half crescent shape on the paper with a 2 1/2-inch wide base resting on the fold, and the pointed end at the open edge. Cut along both sides of the crescent shape, and open at the fold. This is the brim of the hat.
-
7
Fold a 1/2-inch edge along the inner curve of the brim, and apply a line of glue along the edge. Attach it to the body of the hat.
-
8
Crumple a small piece of paper into a ball, and glue it to the top of the hat to resemble a button.

Tips & Warnings
Adjust the measurements of the two circles and the crescent shape to create different sizes of hats.
Make two notches in the brim before fastening it to the hat body. This will make it easier to conform to the shape of the hat.
Paper that is too lightweight will not hold up well when forming the body of the hat.
Allow the glue to dry thoroughly before attempting to wear the hat.
