Locate the steel and tap it lightly. Listen for how dense it is. If there is more steel directly behind it, the knocking will be more dense and less hollow. Mark the areas on the steel that seem slightly different with a black marker.

Place a metal detector against the steel. The metal detector will light up because of the steel in the front. Move the metal detector along the steel. It will continue to beep as it comes into contact with the steel.

Move it until it begins to beep more incessantly. When you move it over the steel with more steel behind it, the beeping will get much louder. Mark these locations with the black marker and see if they match up with the marks from earlier.

Run the metal detector along the steel in the same manner until you reach the end of the desired area. Mark all the locations where the metal detector detects steel behind steel.
