How to Change the Skeins in a Crochet

How to Change the Skeins in a Crochet thumbnail
Whether it's to change patterns or colors, sometimes it's necessary to join different skeins of yarn together.

If you are laboring over a large crochet project, you will more than likely need to adjoin a skein of yarn or change the color. There are different ways to change the yarn, some trickier than others. You can join the yarn by using a knot, but always try to make the knot at the end of a row so that you can hide it easily. You can also change the yarn using a weaving method if you want to avoid knots in your crochet piece. When using the weaving method, all you need to do is uplift the new yarn during the stitch. The weaving method differs slightly depending on the stitch you are working with.

Instructions

  1. The Weaving Method

    • 1

Release your existing skein and grasp the new skein using your hand that normally controls the yarn. Be sure to leave a 4-inch-long tail from the earlier yarn skein.

    • 2

Weave the tail in or hide it as you continue crocheting.

    • 3

Place the yarn tail over the crochet stitches and stitch over it in order to hide the yarn.

    When Using a Double Stitch

    • 4

Position the crochet hook all the way through the stitch.

    • 5

Crochet over the tail using the earlier skein. Pull the yarn all the way through the two stitches.

    • 6

Repeat the process using the new yarn.

    • 7

Pull the new yarn through the remaining stitches.

    • 8

Grasp the tail of the new yarn during the joining process in order to stop the yarn end from pulling straight through the stitch.

    When Using a Half-Double Stitch

    When Using a Single Stitch

    • 12

Crochet over the tail using the old skein color.

    • 13

Incorporate the tail into the next stitch.

    • 14

Crochet over the tail using the new skein and tug the tail through the remaining stitches.

    When Using a Slip Stitch

    • 15

Position the crochet hook all the way through the slip stitch.

    • 16

Crochet over the tail using the new skein.

    • 17

Pull the new skein through the eye on the crochet hook.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is also possible to change color in the middle of a row; all you need to do is tie a knot in the middle of the two stitches where you want the color change to take effect.

  • If you are changing the color of the yarn, be sure to weave the ends into the same color.
