Make a coin purse from your favorite fabric for a convenient travel accessory in your pocket or in your purse. Find a fabric that complements your purse to make a coordinating accessory or make a neutral-colored coin purse to match any purse. Add a decorative gemstone or rhinestone button to the coin purse for a little bit of glittery shine, or use an extra button from around the home for a simple and inexpensive project.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Draw an oval on your fabric. Make the oval about 7 inches long by 3 inches wide and cut out the oval. Use the shape to cut an identical oval from the lining fabric.

    • 2

Lay the fabrics together and sew a running stitch around the outer edges. A running stitch is a small, straight line of stitches. To make a running stitch by hand, insert the threaded needle through the underside to the top of the fabric. Move the needle forward about 1/8-inch and sew downward to the underside. Move the needle forward another 1/8-inch and repeat the process to make another stitch.

    • 3

Measure 4 1/2 inches from one short end. Draw a line across the width of the fabrics and cut across the line.

    • 4

Fold the cut edges of each two layer piece inward and sew a running stitch to close the edges.

    • 5

Lay the pieces together with the lining sides facing outward. Align the rounded bottoms together. There should be 1 1/2 inches of fabric exposed from the larger half of the oval.

    • 6

Sew around the bottom and up the 3 inch sides of the shapes with a running stitch.

    • 7

Fold the extra 1 1/2 inches downward to make the flap and iron to make the flap stay down.

    • 8

Cut a slit in the center of the flap and sew a buttonhole stitch all the way around the slit. To make the buttonhole stitch, insert the threaded needle from the underside, through the fabric about 1/8-inch away from the slit. Wrap the thread around the slit and back into the underside of the fabric. Repeat all the way around the slit to strengthen the buttonhole and keep it from fraying.

    • 9

Fold the flap against the purse and make a mark through the slit onto the fabric. Sew a button over top of the mark.
