Your child may need cosmetics during dance recitals, school plays or just for fun. Be sure that the products your child uses are safe, non-irritating and free of chemicals. According to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, personal care products are the least-regulated products on the market, with no testing requirements. Things You'll Need

  • Beeswax
  • Castor oil
  • Sesame oil
  • Beet juice
  • Unflavored, unsweetened gelatin
  • Essential oils such as orange or peppermint
  • Unscented bubble bath
  • Powdered milk
  • Cocoa powder
  • Pure cocoa butter
  • Natural food coloring
  • Aloe vera gel
  • Glitter

Instructions

  1. Lip gloss

      Melt 1/4 cup beeswax over low heat.

      Remove from the heat and add 1/4 cup castor oil.

      Stir in 2 tablespoons sesame oil.

      Carefully mix in drops of beet juice until you reach the color you need.

    Hair Gel

      Dissolve 1 teaspoon of unflavored, unsweetened gelatin in 1 cup of warm water.

      Children may object to the odor of the gelatin, so try adding 3 or 4 drops of essential oil such as orange or peppermint. When using essential oil, reduce the amount of gelatin to 1/4 teaspoon.

    Chocolate Bubble Bath

      Begin with 1 cup of unscented bubble bath.

      Add 1/2 cup powdered milk and 1/3 cup cocoa powder.

      Mix until well blended.

    Face Paint

      Choose the appropriate paint color from all natural food coloring.

      Measure 1 tablespoon of cocoa butter.

      Blend 3 or 4 drops of natural food coloring into the cocoa butter.

    Glitter Face and Body Gel

      Choose all-natural aloe vera gel.

      Apply to the face, shoulders or arms. Do not use around the eyes or mouth.

Tips & Warnings

  • Homemade cosmetics do not contain preservatives. These cosmetics will keep for two weeks in the refrigerator. To avoid contamination do not use your fingers to apply the cosmetics. Use cotton swabs, cotton balls or clean makeup sponges.
