How to Sew a Short Sarong
A sarong can be a beautiful cover-up for your beach or pool ensemble. This garment is a lightweight and colorful accessory that can add flair to your swimsuit. You can also use a sarong as a shawl to add color to a simple dress for dinner at a nice restaurant. A sarong is an easy sewing project for beginning or advanced sewers — you can make a sarong in your favorite color or to coordinate with your favorite swimsuit.

1
Wash and dry your fabric to allow for any shrinking that may occur. Iron the fabric. Lay it on your work surface with the “wrong” side up.
-
2
Fold the edge of the fabric over a 1/4 inch all the way around. Iron the fold to hold it in place. Fold the fabric over another 1/4 inch and pin it in place with your straight pins. This will be the hem of your sarong. The pins will keep the fold in place until you sew it.

3
Sew the hem of your sarong with a straight stitch. Use a stitch length between 10 and 15 stitches for your hem. Remove the pins as you sew. The hem will keep the fabric from fraying and give it a more finished look.

Pin the tassel trim to the short ends of your sarong. Sew the trim in place to complete your sarong.

Tips & Warnings
Use a tassel trim in a different color than your fabric for a more vibrant look.
Wrap the fabric around your waist before hemming it to get an idea of how the sarong will look. If you want it shorter, cut the fabric before hemming it.
