How to Make a Preschool Fire Craft

How to Make a Preschool Fire Craft thumbnail
Children need to stay at least 3 feet away from fireplaces.

A preschool fire craft teaches children about fire without putting the children in danger. According to Federal Emergency Management Agency, the number of residential fires increases every winter due to the use of heating units, such as wood burning stoves and space heaters. Construct a fireplace craft with brown paper on a wall without the need to light any logs. You can discuss fire safety and the winter season in general using this simple craft.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a brown grocery paper bag across its back seam with scissors. Cut off the bottom to form a large rectangle. Repeat with the other bag.

    • 2

Tape the two bags together with tape on their backs or the printed sides, to make a large rectangle. Draw a square, approximately 12 by 12 inches, with an arched top, in the center of the blank side of the paper to form the inside of the fireplace.

    • 3

Draw a log at the bottom of the square. Squeeze 1/4 cup red tempura paint onto a paper plate. Press a rectangular shaped sponge into the paint; this will form the bricks. Wipe any excess paint onto the side of the plate.

    • 4

Press the sponge onto the brown paper where you want to create bricks. Start at the bottom of the paper. Press the entire sponge onto the paper and lift the sponge straight up. Then press the sponge next to the first formed brick. Dip the sponge back into the paint and add bricks everywhere on the paper except the open area with the log.

    • 5

Paint the log brown with brown tempura paint using a paintbrush. After it dries, draw bark marks with the black marker.

    • 6

Draw triangular flames with orange construction paper and glue it onto the log.

Tips & Warnings

  • Aluminum foil or red paper can be used to form the fire.

  • Discuss with the children about fire guards and always staying a few feet away from any type of fires.

  • Hang Christmas stockings above the fireplace during the holidays.
