Recycle soda tabs into accessories such as belts.

Pull tabs, which are also known as soda tabs or pop tops, are the piece of metal on the top of a soda can that you pull to open the can. Lately, they have become popular accessories on bags, jewelry and belts. Crocheting a pull tab belt is very similar to regular crocheting, but by adding pull tabs to the project, you can create a unique accessory that will stand out wherever you go. You need to be familiar with crocheting skills such as chaining, single crocheting and double crocheting.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 skein heavy yarn
  • Approximately 100 pull tabs
  • Medium-sized crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Craft needle

Instructions

    • 1

Leave about one foot of yarn as a tail and crochet a chain of eight. Work a double crochet into the fourth chain from the hook.

    • 2

Wrap the yarn over the hook and insert the hook into the larger hole of a pop top. Wrap the yarn over the hook again and pull it back through the hole. Wrap the yarn over the hook and pull it through the loops on the hook.

    • 3

Wrap the yarn over the hook and insert it into the smaller hole of the pull tab. Wrap the yarn over the hook again and pull it back through the hole. Wrap the yarn over the hook and pull it through the loops on the hook.

    • 4

Skip three chains, then make two double crochets in the last chain. Turn the project and chain three.

    • 5

Make one double crochet in the second stitch. Wrap the yarn over the hook and insert the hook into the larger hole of a new pull tab. Wrap the yarn over the hook again, then pull it back through the hole. Wrap the yarn over the hook and pull it through all the loops on the hook.

    • 6

Repeat this method in the smaller hole of the pull tab. Make one double crochet in each of the last two stitches. Chain three and turn.

    • 7

Continue making two double crochets at each end -- the chain of three when you turn counts as the first double crochet -- and crocheting a pull tab in the middle of the row. Always begin by crocheting in the larger hole of the pull tab first and crocheting in the smaller hole second, so when you look at the belt horizontally, the smaller end of the pull tab is on the top in alternating rows. Stop crocheting rows when the belt is as long as the circumference of your waist, minus the length of the clench buckle.

    • 8

Make a row of single crochets across. Sew the yarn around the end of one side of the clench buckle. Sew the beginning tail of the yarn around the end of the other side of the clench buckle. Cut and tie the yarn at both ends, then weave the tails into the belt with the craft needle.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can take a different color of yarn and blanket stitch it around the outer edges of the belt to make the sides of the belt appear more finished.

  • Before beginning, you might need to use a wire cutter to remove any sharp edges on the pull tabs, which could hurt you when you are making or wearing the belt.

  • When sewing the belt to the buckle, be sure to fasten it so the belt will not twist when you fasten it around your waist.
