How to Remove a Rusted Jamb Nut in a Kitchen Faucet

A kitchen faucet repair can be complicated by a rusty nut.

Performing your own plumbing repairs on a kitchen faucet isn't hard, unless you encounter a problem such as a rusted nut that you can't remove. The entire job may turn into a nightmare and you may wish you had called a plumber to perform the work. You can remove a rusted nut on a kitchen faucet using the proper tools and procedures, which require a moderate amount of time and effort.

Things You'll Need

• Penetrating catalyst
• Adjustable wrench
• Rotary grinding tool
• Pliers

Instructions

1. Spray the nut thoroughly with a penetrating catalyst. A penetrating catalyst is designed to loosen nuts and fittings, making them easier to turn. Allow the nut to soak in the catalyst for 15 to 20 minutes.

2. Tighten an adjustable wrench around the nut and use short powerful bursts to break the nut free. Apply more penetrating catalyst as you work the wrench to free the nut.

3. Install a diamond grinding wheel on a rotary tool if your previous effort yielded no results. Carefully cut through the nut without letting the grinding wheel come into contact with other parts of the faucet. You may have to make a cut on either side of the nut to remove it successfully. Use a pair of pliers to grasp the pieces and pull them out.
