How to Make Cushions Sun-Resistant
Make the fabric on exterior cushions, such as those used on boat seats and patio furniture, resistant to sun rays. The sun can fade fabric and lead to sun rot, which is a deterioration of the fabric. If you upholster the cushions with a material that does not have UV-resistant properties or you want extra protection, you will need to treat the fabric with an exterior fabric sun protectant, which is available at your local home improvement center or boating supply store. 1
Pour the exterior sun protectant into a garden sprayer, and adjust the sprayer nozzle to a fine spray. Take the cushions to a well-ventilated area, and put on rubber gloves to protect your skin.
-
2
Lay the cushions on a flat surface and out of direct sunlight so they do not dry too quickly. Wipe the cushions with a towel to remove any dust.
-
-
3
Spray a clean corner of the towel with the sun protectant, and wipe a small, inconspicuous spot on the cushions. Let it sit for four hours, and then check the cushions for any damage to the fabric.

4
Spray the cushions with the garden sprayer, using light, even, overlapping sprays. Cover one side, and leave it to dry for four hours. Then, spray on a second coat. Let it dry for 24 hours.

5
Turn the cushions over. Spray on the first layer, and let it dry for four hours. Then, spray on the second layer, and let it dry for 24 hours. Replace the cushions. Reapply the protectant once a year.

If you are open to re-covering the cushions and replacing them with something else, select a UV-resistant fabric. These fabrics will not fade or deteriorate when used outdoors.
