How to Make a Cool Hat Out of Paper

Use colored paper to make your origami hat more visually appealing.

Whether you need a hat for a costume party or just enjoy the Japanese art of paper folding known as origami, it is possible to create a cool hat out of a single sheet of paper. Newsprint or wrapping paper works well for this project because it is quite large. If you have a smaller head than the average person, try cutting your paper to a smaller size for a better fitting hat. Likewise, people with large heads should use a larger sheet of paper for this project.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the paper in half and then fold the two upper corners toward the middle, to form a triangular point at the top of the paper.

    • 2

Fold the uppermost bottom flap in half and then fold it up to meet the base of the triangle.

    • 3

Turn your sheet of paper over and fold in the two sides of the triangle so they meet in the middle of the paper.

    • 4

Fold the triangle points downward so the tip of the triangle tucks under the side folds you just created.

    • 5

Fold in the two bottom corners to create an upside-down triangle at the bottom of your sheet. Then, fold this point in half and then fold it up, tucking the tip of the point into the band of the hat.

    • 6

Pull the two bottom points apart to create an opening. Pull one end toward you and the other away from you and the hat will open. This will create a tall hat almost like a bishop wears.
