How to Crochet Gauntlets

How to Crochet Gauntlets thumbnail
Gauntlets can be light and lacy or warm and cozy.

Gauntlets are a great accessory for that time of the year when the air has a slight chill to it. When you feel the Fall breezes start to blow into town, pull on a pair of gauntlets and keep your arms and wrists warm while your fingers are free to do other things. Gauntlets work well for indoor wear; you can type while you wear them or use your hands for household tasks. They're also great driving accessories because your fingers are free to steer the wheel and tune the stereo while your hands and arms stay cozy.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the circumference of your hand at the widest point; call this measurement A. Measure the distance from your knuckles to the middle of your forearm (where you want the gauntlets to end); call this measurement B.

    • 2

Make several chain stitches with your size US I crochet hook and worsted weight yarn. The length of your chain stitches should match the length of measurement B.

    • 3

Make one more chain, then make a single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across.

    • 4

Make one chain and turn your work. Make a single crochet in the back loops only of every stitch across the row.

    • 5

Repeat step four until the piece is as tall as measurement A.

    • 6

Cut the working yarn, leaving a 15-inch tail. Yarn over with this tail and pull it all the way through the loop on the hook to tighten it and finish off the piece. Thread the tail onto an embroidery needle.

    • 7

Fold the gauntlet in half lengthwise, with the right side (outside) of the gauntlet facing inside the fold. Stitch down the long side of the gauntlet to join the two edges together; use your embroidery needle and yarn tail to make the stitches. Stitch a whip stitch (making looped stitches through both layers and back out again) down the edge for two inches.

    • 8

Leave two inches unstitched along the sides of the gauntlet for the thumb hole. Continue stitching the rest of the seam until you reach the bottom. Weave in the yarn tail on the wrong side of the gauntlet, then remove the needle and turn the gauntlet right side out to wear.

    • 9

Repeat steps one through eight to make a second gauntlet for your other hand.

Tips & Warnings

  • To make a chain stitch, bring the yarn up and over the hook from back to front (yarn over); catch the yarn in the hook and draw it through the loop on the hook.

  • To make a single crochet stitch, insert your hook underneath both loops of the stitch indicated. Yarn over and draw up a loop, then yarn over and draw through both loops on the hook.

  • To make a single crochet in the back loops only, insert your hook down through the top of the stitch so the hook only goes under the loop that is furthest away from you as you hold the work. Complete the single crochet as usual; this creates a horizontal ridge across the work and gives it more stretch.
