How to Make a Paper Ring Box

How to Make a Paper Ring Box thumbnail
Place an engagement ring in a simple paper box instead of a silk-lined jewelry box.

Whether surprising your significant other with an engagement ring, or just giving a special gift, the ring needs to come in a box. While most jewelry stores provide their own boxes, you can "confuse" your loved one by putting the ring in a paper box. They might see the box and wonder why you used paper. It is a fun way to give a gift. The paper box uses origami folding techniques, but even a beginner to origami will find the steps possible to perform.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Box Bottom

    • 1

Fold the 3-inch square paper in half vertically and then unfold. Fold it in half horizontally and then unfold. Fold each corner so that the tip touches the center made by the previous folds.

    • 2

Fold the top edge down just past the center of the square. Fold the bottom edge up over top of the edge you just folded. You are folding the square into thirds. Unfold both folds. Repeat with the left and right edge. There is a square shape in the center of the square made by creases from these folds. That small square becomes the bottom of the box.

    • 3

Fold the top right corner inside along the diagonal crease. Lift up the corner and push it inside by pressing against the back. This will lift the right and top sides and make a little tab with the corner. Repeat with the top left corner and press the tabs one on top of the other against the top side of the box. Unfold the tabs so you are back to the starting position of this step.

    • 4

Unfold the triangular flap on the top of the square. Refold the tabs from Step 3, and fold down the paper above the tabs so that it covers the tabs and the little triangle piece covers the bottom of the box.

    • 5

Repeat Steps 3 and 4 on the opposite side of the box.

    Box Lid

    • 6

Fold the 2-inch square in half horizontally and then unfold. Fold it in half vertically and then unfold. Fold each corner so that the tip touches the center crease made by previous folds.

    • 7

Fold the top edge down so it lines up with the center. Fold the bottom edge up so it lines up with center. Unfold both folds. Repeat with the left and right edge. There is now a square shape at the center of the square.

    • 8

Fold the top right corner inside to make a tab. Repeat with the top left corner. Unfold the tabs and then unfold the triangular fold at the top edge.

    • 9

Refold the corner tabs from Step 3 and fold down the paper at the top so that it covers the tabs and the little triangle covers the bottom of the lid. Repeat with the opposite side of the lid.

Tips & Warnings

  • Place a tiny pillow or bed of silk inside the box for the ring to rest on.

  • The box is paper. Do not stick it in a pocket or in a bag with heavy objects. The box might squish.
