How to Crochet Single Crochet Squares
Single crochet is arguably the simplest crochet stitch there is, yet it is versatile enough to make any number of shapes and patterns. For example, you can use the single crochet stitch to make a square. There are a few different ways to approach this; one is crocheting in straight rows until you have finished your square. Once you have completed your square, you can make more and sew them together to make a quilt or a bag.

1
Make a chain. The number of chains you add depends on how large you want your square to be. You make one chain by putting the hook into the loop of a slip knot, wrapping the yarn over the hook and pulling the yarn through the loop on the hook.
-
2
Make one more chain and single crochet in each chain across. To single crochet, you insert the crochet hook into the next chain (or stitch), wrap the yarn over the hook and pull the yarn through the stitch. Wrap the yarn over the hook again and pull it through both loops on the hook.

Repeat Step 2 until you have made enough rows to match the height of the square to the width, so that you are working with a square.

4
Cut the yarn with a few inches to spare at the end. Tie a knot in it against the last stitch to prevent unraveling. Thread the yarn onto the craft needle and weave the end into the project.

Tips & Warnings
You can change the color of the yarn between rows to add some interesting contrast to your square. Or, if you are creating a larger project, such as a quilt, you can use different colors for different squares.
