How to Create a Drawing Grid for an Enlarged Painting
A drawing grid is a picture overlay created by equally-spaced horizontal and vertical lines that allow you to copy or enlarge a drawing onto a larger drawing space, such as a canvas or wall. The lines divide the picture into sections and a separate drawing grid is drawn on the larger drawing space using the same line ratio. The picture is copied section by section, resulting in a larger copy. The reference points created by the drawing grid allow you to avoid distorting the picture.
Instructions

1
Place the ruler along the left edge of the picture.
-
2
Mark the picture at 1-inch increments along the left edge with the pencil.
-
-
3
Position the ruler along the bottom of the picture.
-
4
Mark the picture in 1-inch increments along the bottom of the picture with the pencil.
-
5
Draw horizontal and vertical lines across the picture with the pencil, using the marks along the left and bottom edges as a reference, to divide the picture into 1-inch square sections. Use the ruler to keep your lines straight.
-
6
Calculate the ratio that will make the grid the appropriate size on the larger drawing space. For example, if you want to double the size of the drawing, multiply the size of each square (1-inch) by two. Each square in the enlarged drawing grid will measure 2-inches square.
-
7
Position the ruler along the left edge of where you want to create the picture on the larger drawing space and lightly draw a line with the pencil. Mark the larger drawing space with the pencil along the line according to the calculations in the previous step. For example, if doubling the size of the drawing, make a mark on the line every two inches.
-
8
Position the ruler along the bottom edge of where you want to create the picture on the larger drawing space and lightly draw a line with the pencil. Mark with the pencil according to the calculations you did to make the picture the size you desire.
-
9
Draw a grid with the pencil using the marks you created on the larger drawing space. Draw lines on the top and right edges of the grid to close off all of the boxes.

Tips & Warnings
Remember that you need to have the same number of rows and columns on your enlarged drawing space as you have on the original picture.
