How to Make Iron-on Ties for Toddler Shirts

How to Make Iron-on Ties for Toddler Shirts thumbnail
An iron-on tie shirt lets your toddler dress like his father.

It can be difficult trying to wrangle your toddler into a proper necktie. A better alternative is to create an appliqued tie on his T-shirt for a cute fashion statement appropriate for both the playground and preschool picture day. Sewing on an applique tie is the most common method, but you also can make a simple twill or denim tie with iron-on fabric. No sewing skills are necessary for this simple project.

Things You'll Need

  • Iron-on fabric (denim or twill)
  • Scissors
  • Necktie
  • Fabric marker
  • Toddler sized shirt
  • Iron

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the end of a necktie on the front of a toddler's T-shirt. Determine how long you would like your iron-on tie to be, and subtract one and a half inches from that.

    • 2

Trace the desired length of tie onto the wrong side of a piece of denim or twill iron-on fabric with a fabric marker. Set the tie aside and cut out the "tie" piece of iron-on fabric.

    • 3

Trace a trapezoid shape that is just wider than the top part of your iron-on tie piece and one and a half inches tall. Curve the top part of the trapezoid, if necessary, to line up with the shirt neckline, and cut. This piece will be the "knot" of your tie.

    • 4

Place the knot and tie iron-on pieces on the shirt, transfer side down. Iron on high heat to secure.
