How to Crochet Using French Knots

How to Crochet Using French Knots thumbnail
French knots are completed over crochet or knitwork.

The French knot is an embroidery stitch that adds texture or embellishments to various embroidery projects. It can also be applied to crochet projects. The French knot can be a challenging stitch that requires multiple attempts to achieve the perfect tightness and positioning. Unlike the rest of crochet, the French knots are done with a needle on top of crochet work instead of with a crochet hook.

Instructions

    • 1

Thread the needle with the yarn by hand or use a needle threader.

    • 2

Anchor the yarn to the crochet work. Tie the end of the yarn in a knot underneath the crochet and work through a piece of yarn on the underside so the knot doesn’t show from the top of the work.

    • 3

Pull the needle and yarn up through the crochet work in the spot you’d like to make a French knot and point the back of the needle at the spot.

    • 4

Wrap the yarn around the needle three times, and put the needle back down into the crochet work and pull it through. This creates a French knot on top of your work. Repeat as many times as necessary all over the crochet work.
