How to Clone With Layer Masks in PSE 5

PSE 5, PhotoShop Elements 5, is a photo-editing software. Layer masks change the properties of the layer they are attached to. However, in Elements only adjustment layers have layer masks. This makes it more difficult to clone aspects of your photo with a layer mask. The cloning tool is a paint brush that is used to remove unsightly objects from the photo using the same pixel colors of the surrounding background. You can still use a layer mask to clone with if you combine the adjustment layer with the photograph's background layer.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your photo in PSE. In the Layers pallet, select the background layer, labeled "Background," and click the "New Adjustments Layer" icon and choose "Levels." This will create a new layer above the background layer.

    • 2

Select the new Adjustment Layer in the layer palette, click "Layer" in the toolbar at the top of the screen and select "Group with Previous Layer." Now your adjustment layer, with its layer mask, will be grouped with your background.

    • 3

Select the layer mask, which is right next to the adjustment layer thumbnail, and click the "Clone" tool in the tools palette.

    • 4

Select your background image and hold down "Alt" and click on an area of the image you want to clone.

    • 5

Select the layer mask and apply the clone brush in the area where you want to remove the object.
