How to Use JB-80 on Car Struts

You must remove the wheels to provide access to your struts.

Every time your car goes over a bump or other irregularity in the road, it is the struts that absorb the impact and make for a comfortable ride. Struts are comprised of the springs, spring seat, bearings, knuckles and most importantly here, the shock absorbers. Shock absorbers are used to dampen the motion created by the moving springs and require lubrication for proper function. If you have noticed noise coming from your struts, get yourself a can of JB-80 and fix the problem yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Park your car on a flat and even surface, put it in gear or park, apply the handbrake, and jack up the car on the appropriate side to lift the corresponding wheel off the ground. Place an axle stand under the car to support the weight before removing the jack. Be certain to use the correct jacking and support spots as identified in the owners manual for the car.

    • 2

Remove the wheel and set aside. Identify the mounting nuts that hold the strut in place, and remove them. Loosen and remove the strut assembly.

    • 3

Loosen and remove the nuts at either end of the strut assembly; then pull the dampener plunger from the tube by pulling either end of the assembly away from each other.

    • 4

Clean all grease from the plunger as well as the tube it was removed from using some clean rags. Ensure all debris and other contaminants inside the tube and on the plunger are removed.

    • 5

Spray all internal surfaces with JB-80 spray lubricant as well as the inner surfaces of the tube.

    • 6

Reassemble the strut in the opposite order of how you disassembled it. Then replace the wheel. Place the floor jack under the vehicle, jack it up, remove the jack stand, and then lower and remove the jack.

    • 7

Repeat all steps with the other wheel as required.

Tips & Warnings

  • If not entirely comfortable with performing the steps listed, seek the help of a trained professional.

  • If the spring must be removed on your struts to provide access to the internal assembly, take the removed strut to a suitable garage to have it compressed and removed safely to avoid injury.
